We don't value giving it, but we LOVE to get it. I think people have encouragement down as just words though. Barnabas shows us that true encouragement is getting in there, coming alongside, and DOING with people, not just cheering from the sidelines. I agree Hey brother Jim,

Long time no hear brother,

I love this statement:

Such leaders are often overlooked, but the indefinite continuity of a team requires encouragement and God’s people will be his team eternally.

I agree

This one resonates with me. Part of our training to be NCOs in the Marines was to learn our leadership style. I can put on an A-type personality if I need to, but I really have a passive leadership style. That means that I lead by building teams and teamwork through encouragement. This is one thing you see in Paul also. As he writes to encourage each of the Churches in the cities, Timothy and Titus. Especially Timothy, you see a careful attention to encouraging him to keep the faith, stir up the gift, not allow people to look down on his youth, and to reproduce himself. Hutch,

Most of the people who pass themselves off as being a pastor/elder/lead servant today are really nothing more than well practiced public speakers. Once you have learned the basics of public speaking, it really is not that hard. On the other hand, true loving, encouraging shepherding is hard work, you have to die to yourself, be servant of all, you must walk in the spirit and not in your own strength, you have to really love God's people. As I look back on 20 years of sojourning in the church of man made traditions, I have come to realize that the rare individuals who loved and encouraged me in my walk with Christ were really the elders in Christ’s church even though they were not recognized as such. These folks were never the unbiblical paid public speakers/pulpiteers.
